Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of various planting media combinations on the growth of celery plants (Apium graveolens L.) in a vertical farming system. Vertical farming is an alternative cultivation method suitable for limited spaces. The experiment was conducted in Kampiri Village, Wajo Regency, South Sulawesi, from January to April 2022. A Randomized Block Design (RBD) was used with four media treatments: P0 (control), P1 (Topsoil + Sand + Cow manure), P2 (Topsoil + Rice husk charcoal + Cow manure), and P3 (Topsoil + Cocopeat + Cow manure), each replicated three times. Observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, and fresh weight. Results showed that the P3 treatment yielded the best performance, with a plant height of 22.15 cm, 39.33 leaves, and a fresh weight of 46.66 grams. Although statistical analysis indicated no significant effect, the P3 media combination consistently gave the highest average values across all parameters. These findings suggest that a mixture of topsoil, cocopeat, and cow manure can potentially optimize celery growth in vertical farming systems.
