Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine how ChatGPT is used among biology education students at Puangrimaggalatung University, Indonesia. The methodology was quantitative descriptive research, using a sampling technique, namely, the accidental sampling technique. Accidental sampling, also known as accidental sampling or convenience sampling, is a non-probability sampling method in which researchers select respondents who are easily accessible or happen to be available at the time of data collection. The sample in this study was students in the biology education program in Semesters II, IV, VI and VIII (2021–2024). Data were collected through structured questionnaires. Questions measured students’ perceptions on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of ChatGPT using a Likert Scale. The findings show that ChatGPT has strengths, is able to provide quick access to information, helps students understand complex material, and improves academic writing skills. However, it also has weaknesses, namely, excessive dependence on ChatGPT can reduce critical thinking skills, creativity, and high-level cognitive skills. The opportunities found include increasing digital literacy, innovation in learning methods, and integration of technology in education. The threats identified are decreased critical thinking skills, plagiarism, and misuse of information. These findings are expected to be used as considerations in optimizing the use of ChatGPT in academic environments
